US ambassador to Pakistan stepping down, report says

The U.S. ambassador to the strategically vital nation of Pakistan is leaving after less than two years on the job, The Washington Post reported Monday. 

Cameron Munter told his staff he plans to step down this summer, the Post reports. Ambassadors usually serve three-year tours, but Munter has only been in his post since October 2010.

The news comes as U.S.-Pakistani relations are at a historic low after U.S. forces raided Osama bin Laden's compound last May and accidentally killed 24 Pakistani troops six months later. The U.S. has ignored Pakistani demands that it apologize for the deadly air strike and cease its drone attacks on Islamic militants.

"Word is that Munter, a veteran career diplomat whose prior postings had been in Bonn, Prague and Warsaw and as ambassador to Serbia before becoming a senior official in Iraq in 2009 and 2010, simply wasn't a good fit with the Pakistani government — and perhaps not with the Obama administration as well," the Post reports.
