Democrats play musical chairs on Senate foreign affairs panel

Engel wins top foreign policy spot

Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.) formally got the top Democratic spot on the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday, replacing defeated Rep. Howard Berman (D-Calif.).

Engel, currently the top Democrat on the Western Hemisphere subpanel, was a shoo-in after Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Calif.) abandoned his run after stiff blowback from his bitter Democrat-on-Democrat race against Berman. American Samoa Del. Eni Faleomavaega had vowed to run, but his status as a non-voting member of Congress made his candidacy unviable.

Engel vowed to work with incoming committee chairman Ed Royce (R-Calif.) in a statement after the House Democratic Caucus voted by acclamation to approve him as ranking member.

GOP House member diverges from McCain stance on Rice nomination

Rep. Jeff Duncan (R-S.C.) disagreed on Monday with Sen. John McCain's (R-Ariz.) softening stance on the potential nomination of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice for secretary of State. 

The South Carolina congressman continued to take a hardline stand against Rice as a replacement for Hillary Clinton, saying that the ambassador has been "tainted" by her remarks on the Sept. 11 attacks in Benghazi, Libya.
