Friday's global agenda: The world comes to Washington

By Julian Pecquet - 05/18/12 07:00 AM ET

Your morning global affairs speed-read

President Obama hosts French President Francois Hollande today at the White House, ahead of this weekend's G-8 summit at Camp David. High on the agenda: the eurozone economy and France's early withdrawal from Afghanistan, which is creating tensions within NATO ahead of that organization's meeting Sunday and Monday in Chicago.

Hollande, for his part, is expected to reiterate his promise to “look after the interests of France without making Barack Obama's life more difficult,” reports the French press.

Africa: As part of pre-summit activities, Obama is slated to announce today a $6 billion public-private partnership for investments in African agriculture. Four African heads of state will be on hand for the announcement. Global Affairs has more on that here.

Europe: Obama should use the G-8 summit to press German Chancellor Angela Merkel to commit to a eurozone growth package, opines The New York Times.

The ascendant leftists in Greece, meanwhile, are betting on the European Union caving in and continuing its bailout even if Greece ignores the austerity measures it adopted in exchange for the latest $173 billion bailout.
