Clinton, Annan discuss peace plan alternatives for Syria
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan are discussing alternatives to the six-point peace plan for Syria.
Annan revealed the discussions Friday before heading into a meeting with Clinton at the State Department.
The meeting comes after Annan on Thursday urged the United Nations to ramp up the pressure on Syria following a massacre that western nations are blaming on the Syrian government of President Bashar Assad.
“Syria is a real, real challenge,” Annan said. “Some say the plan may be dead. Is the problem the plan, or … implementation? If it's implementation, how do we get action on that? And if it's with the plan, what other options do we have? So all these questions are now being discussed and we are also exploring how we can work with other governments in the region and around the world to achieve our goals.”
Clinton said the goal of the meeting is to “engender greater response by the government of Syria to the six-point plan that [Annan] has put forth.”
