Report: Clinton to meet next weekend with Egyptian president

By Julian Pecquet - 07/03/12 11:43 AM ET

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will travel to Cairo next week to meet with Egypt's new president, Mohammed Morsi, Egyptian media are reporting.

The English-language Egypt Independent quoted presidential spokesman Yasser Ali as saying Clinton plans to meet with Morsi on Saturday, July 14. Clinton is expected to discuss the violence in nearby Syria and press the Muslim Brotherhood leader on everything from religious rights to Egypt's peace treaty with Israel.

Egypt, the Arab world's most populous country, has long been a key U.S. ally in the Middle East and benefits from $1.3 billion in military aid a year. That support is in question now after the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group with a violent past, won control of parliament and the presidency in the nation's first democratic elections.
