Report: US to offer bounty worth millions for Somali militants

By Julian Pecquet - 06/06/12 07:06 PM ET

The State Department will announce Thursday on its “Rewards for Justice” web site that it is offering rewards of up to $7 million for information leading to the capture of seven leaders of Somalia's al Shabaab, Reuters reports.

The decision opens a new front against the al Qaeda linked group.

“This is the first time we've had key leaders of al Shabaab as part of the Rewards for Justice program," Robert Hartung, an assistant director at the State Department's Bureau of Diplomatic Security, told Reuters.

Al Shabaab was added to the U.S. list of terrorist organizations in 2008.
