Last month's terrorist attack in Benghazi, Libya, is once again dominating the headlines following the publication of emails that reveal that White House and State Department officials were advised two hours after the Sept. 11 attack that Islamist militants had claimed credit. The Obama administration has been under fire from Republicans for its shifting explanation of what sparked the attack that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans. [Reuters]
Hope for Syria: Syria's President Bashar Assad has agreed to a temporary truce for the Eid al-Adha holiday that starts Thursday, U.N. special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi announced this morning. [Reuters]
Aid to Israel, Burma: The Treasury Department is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding today establishing a new framework for administering the recently extended U.S.-Israel Loan Guarantee program,designed to help the Israeli government access financial resources from private capital markets at affordable rates, in order to promote the country’s economic growth and stability. Also Wednesday, Deputy Treasury Secretary Neil Wolin meets with Burmese political and economic leaders after the U.S. ended its ban on international financial assistance programs for Burma.
