US puts $10 million bounty on accused killers of USAID employees

By Julian Pecquet - 01/08/13 12:15 PM ET

The State Department on Tuesday announced a $10 million bounty for information leading to the capture of two Sudanese men accused of killing a U.S. diplomat and a Sudanese employee of the U.S. Agency for International Development in Khartoum five years ago.

The department is offering $5 million for information about Abdelbasit Alhaj Alhassan Haj Hamad and another $5 million for Mohamed Makawi Ibrahim Mohamed, who are accused respectively of shooting USAID diplomat John Michael Granville and Adbelrahman Abbas Rahama. The two men were arrested and sentenced to death in Sudan but escaped in 2010.

Separately, the department and the Treasury Department announced sanctions on the two men that freezes any assets they may have in the United States and bans U.S. residents from assisting them. The two fugitives are believed to be in Somalia.
