Report: Benghazi attack suspect captured in Libya

By Julian Pecquet - 03/14/13 03:29 PM ET

A suspect in last year's terrorist attack in Benghazi has been captured in Libya, according to CNN.

Faraj al-Shibli was arrested within the past two days after returning from Pakistan, CNN reports. He is the only known suspect to be in custody more than six months after the attack that killed U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other Americans. A Tunisian court freed suspect Ali Harzi in January, citing a lack of evidence.

Al-Shibli was reportedly a member of an Islamist group that tried to overthrow Moamar Gadhafi in the 1990s. Gadhafi has accused him of participating in the murder of a German counterintelligence official and his wife 20 years ago.

The arrest comes as Republicans are renewing their probe into events leading up to the attack and its aftermath. Lawmakers told The Hill this week they are considering issuing subpoenas for State Department and CIA personnel wounded in the attack and holding up the nomination of President Obama's nominee to replace Stevens, Deborah Jones, if the administration does not let Congress interview them.
