Report: Top US diplomat for Middle East leaving for UN post

By Julian Pecquet - 05/21/12 06:13 PM ET

The Obama administration's top diplomat for Middle Eastern affairs is leaving the State Department to take a high-level job with the United Nations, Reuters reported Monday.

Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Jeffrey Feltman, a former U.S. ambassador to Lebanon, has been in his current position since August 2009. He is reportedly leaving to become under-secretary-general for political affairs, a key post overseeing conflict negotiations.

At the UN, Feltman will replace B. Lynn Pascoe, another career U.S. diplomat who has been in the post for more than five years.
