UN envoy hails US-Russia deal on Syria as 'hopeful news'

By Julian Pecquet

The decision by the United States and Russia to put their differences aside and jointly host a peace summit between Syrian rebels and the Assad regime earned plaudits from the United Nations' special envoy to the war-torn country.

“This is the first hopeful news concerning that unhappy country in a very long time,” Lakhdar Brahimi said in a statement Wednesday. “The statements made in Moscow constitute a very significant first step forward. It is nevertheless only a first step.”

Secretary of State John Kerry made the announcement late Tuesday after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow. He said the two countries have agreed to host an international conference “as soon as is practical,” perhaps by the end of the month.

By Former congressional Chief of Staff Yleem Poblete

Guest Commentary

Throughout the past decade, as we have struggled to prevent Iran from becoming another North Korea, the U.S. and other responsible nations have enabled Tehran’s assertion that it has a right to possess virtually the full array of technology and materials that could also be applied to a weapons program.

If we hope to stem Iran’s quest, it is time for an integrated approach to arms proliferation. The first step in this process is speaking clearly. Diplomatic chatter by U.S. and international officials has been anything but that.

Treasury identifies dangerous Mexican cartel bosses

By Megan R. Wilson

The Treasury Department on Tuesday said it has identified eight key members of a Mexican drug cartel after a yearlong investigation, setting off a chain reaction of enforcement measures.

Pinpointing and calling out plaza bosses of the Mexican Sinaloa Cartel is an “important” victory, federal officials said on Tuesday, but they say actions are only beginning.

The eight men are strategically located along a 375-mile stretch of the Arizona-Mexico border and act as gatekeepers for drugs and other illegal goods smuggled into or out of the United States.
