Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is scheduled to visit Congress on Thursday in an attempt to beat back Tea Party pressure to cut foreign aid to Egypt and Libya in the wake of anti-American violence in those countries. Read The Hill's story here.

Asian tension: The Senate Foreign Relations Committee's Asia/Pacific subpanel examines “Maritime territorial disputes and sovereignty issues in Asia” with Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell.

Israeli security: The House Foreign Affairs Committee's Middle East panel holds a hearing on “Safeguarding Israel's Security in a Volatile Region.” 

Trade deal: The House Ways and Means Committee's Trade panel considers the benefits of expanding U.S. services trade, including by negotiating an international services agreement. Ambassador Michael Punke, the deputy United States Trade Representative and Permanent Representative to the World Trade Organization, is slated to testify.

House votes to label drywall in response to contaminated products from China

The House late Wednesday approved a bill that would require all drywall used in the United States to bear a label noting the name of the manufacturer.

Members approved H.R. 4212, the Contaminated Drywall Safety Act, by voice vote. The bill would require the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to issue a rule requiring drywall labeling. It would also require the CPSC to issue a rule that puts a limit on the amount of sulphur that can be in drywall and still be considered safe.

Italian court upholds conviction of Americans in rendition case

Italy’s highest criminal court has upheld the conviction of 23 Americans tried in absentia for the CIA’s program of extraordinary rendition, The Associated Press reports.

The ruling on the appealed case marks the end of a three and a half year trial that is the first of its kind anywhere in the world.

Sens. Paul, DeMint not blocking ambassador to Iraq

Senate Tea Party leaders Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said Wednesday they're not blocking President Obama's nominee to be ambassador to Iraq, increasing the chances that Robert Beecroft will get confirmed before Congress leaves town at the end of the week. 

“I don't think we ever did [have a hold] on Iraq,” Paul told reporters as he headed into a vote, “but we do have a hold on the Pakistani ambassador.”

And DeMint told The Hill following Beecroft's nomination hearing Wednesday morning that he should be quickly confirmed.

“I think this nominee is working in Iraq now and we need someone there,” DeMint said. “This is not a political appointment. He knows what he's doing.”
