White House marks nuclear disarmament speech anniversary with Czech breakthrough

By Julian Pecquet

The White House on Friday marked the fourth anniversary of President Obama's Prague speech on nuclear disarmament by announcing a breakthrough in the country where he first laid out his vision.

The Czech Republic is the 10th country to get rid of all of its highly enriched uranium since Obama announced an international effort to secure all vulnerable nuclear material around the world, the administration said. A total of 68 kilograms of material that could have been further processed into a weapon – enough for two nuclear bombs – has been moved to Russia, where it will be downgraded into low enriched uranium for use as an energy source.

“The president called on the world to act with a sense of purpose and without delay to secure vulnerable nuclear material,” National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden said in a statement. “The United States and the global community have responded with an unprecedented effort that has secured thousands of kilograms of HEU and plutonium, enough for dozens of nuclear weapons.”

Lawmakers press State to demand release of Va. man imprisoned in Afghanistan

By Julian Pecquet

Three Republicans wrote to Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday urging him to push for the release of a Virginia military contractor they say was beaten by Afghan forces.

David Gordon was illegally detained Wednesday as a result of a commercial contract dispute with his employer, Tamerlane Global Services, the lawmakers allege. They say the Afghan government has asked for $2.4 million for his release and that he was beaten overnight.

“The threats that he is receiving and the demonstrated lack of protection during his confinement give us serious concern about his welfare,” they wrote. “We request that the Department of State intervene and expedite the release of this illegally detained American.”

The letter is signed by Reps. Scott Rigell (R-Va.), Frank Wolf (R-Va.) and Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.).

Obama renews sanctions against Somalia despite new government

By Julian Pecquet

President Obama informed Congress on Thursday of his intention to renew sanctions against Somalia despite the country forming a central government for the first time in 22 years.

The Obama administration recognized the government of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Jan. 17. The move paves the way for a resumption of civilian and military aid and full diplomatic relations with a country that had operated without a government since warlords toppled the central government in 1991.

“Although the U.S. recognition underscores a strong commitment to Somalia's stabilization, it does not remove the importance of U.S. sanctions, especially against persons undermining the stability of Somalia,” Obama wrote to congressional leaders. “For this reason, I have determined that it is necessary to continue the national emergency with respect to Somalia and to maintain in force the sanctions to respond to this threat.”

Obama administration: Middle East women want our support

By Julian Pecquet

The Obama administration is fighting for women's rights in the Middle East because that's what they want, the State Department's top public outreach official said Thursday.

Under Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs Tara Sonenshine's remarks were sparked by criticism that the United States is acting imperiously as it seeks to promote values that some conservative Muslims deem offensive to Islam. The issue is particularly salient in Egypt, where the ruling Muslim Brotherhood has denounced a proposed U.N. declaration condemning violence against women while failing to protect women protesting President Mohammed Morsi.

“They want our help. They seek our help. They need our help,” Sonenshine said at a Brookings Institution event on U.S. policy and women in the Middle East.
