Planned Parenthood tops $1 billion in assets

By Julian Pecquet - 12/30/11 06:19 PM ET

The nations largest abortion provider topped $1 billion in total net assets in 2009-2010, its first time reaching that mark, according to Planned Parenthoods latest annual report.

The report, released Friday, is sure to rekindle Republican lawmakers efforts to defund the organization in 2012. Five of the GOP presidential candidates have also signed a pledge to defund Planned Parenthood.

Almost half of the groups annual revenue — 46 percent — comes from taxpayers in the form of grants, contracts and Medicaid payments, according to an analysis by the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List.

Planned Parenthood said it does not receive any federal funding for abortions — only for contraception, prevention and other medical services for low-income women.

With over a billion in net assets and a business model centered on abortion and government subsidies,” SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said in a statement, it is time for Planned Parenthood to end its reliance on taxpayer dollars.
