EMILY’s List sees historic win in Oregon special election
The pro-abortion rights group EMILY’s List claimed a historic victory with Wednesday’s election of Oregon Democrat Suzanne Bonamici to Congress, following two other special election wins this electoral cycle.
Bonamici will take over the seat vacated by Rep. David Wu (D), who resigned in July over a sex scandal. Her victory comes after two other women supported by EMILY’s List — Janice Hahn in California and Kathy Hochul in New York — won election to Congress last year.
"There’s no doubt that you made the difference in Suzanne’s race and helped us make EMILY’s List history this cycle, by electing a third pro-choice, Democratic woman to Congress in a special election,” EMILY’s List told its supporters in an email alert.
“Because of you, I’ll be going to Washington as the only woman in the Oregon delegation to work hard for women and families and all of my constituents across the state,” she said.
The wins come as 2012 promises to be another landmark year in the battle over abortion rights.
States have enacted record numbers of bans and restrictions over the past year, and all the candidates for the Republican nomination have vowed to curtail abortion rights to various extents and ban federal funding for abortion providers.
