Court ends challenge to 'fetal pain' abortion law

By Elise Viebeck

A federal appeals court has ended one of the first-ever challenges to a law that bans some abortions by citing fetal pain.

The mixed decision from the Ninth Circuit also favored plaintiff Jennie Linn McCormack by dismissing a criminal case against her. McCormack faced up to five years in prison after ingesting medication to induce an abortion, which is illegal in Idaho, where she lives.

In its ruling, the court said the Idaho law places an "undue burden" on women seeking abortion care by making them, rather than simply abortion providers, liable for rule-breaking.

Group fundraises off Dems' 'radical abortion convention'

By Elise Viebeck

Americans United for Life Action is passing the hat in response to last week's Democratic convention, which the group calls the "most pro-abortion conference in a generation."

"Watching President Obama's pro-abortion convention, I actually felt like I was viewing Planned Parenthood's national conference," AUL Action President Charmaine Yoest wrote in a letter to supporters.

"On President Obama's watch, Planned Parenthood received more than $1.34 million of your tax dollars every day," Yoest claimed. "We need your immediate contribution to end Planned Parenthood's occupation of the White House in November."

Dems: House GOP backed 55 votes on 'anti-women policies'

By Elise Viebeck

House Republicans have held more than 50 votes on "anti-woman" policies during the last two years, according to Democrats on the Energy and Commerce Committee.

In a new report, the Democrats say 55 GOP-sponsored votes favored policies to "undermine women’s health, roll back women’s rights and defund programs and institutions that provide support for women."

Democrats are aiming to shore up the women's vote by placing a special focus on women's health issues before November. Abortion, contraception and the 2010 healthcare law have already played a prominent role in the Democratic convention now under way in Charlotte, N.C.

President of pro-abortion-rights group says women can't trust Romney

By Ramsey Cox

President of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) Nancy Keenan said women cannot trust GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney.

“Put simply, women in America cannot trust Mitt Romney,” Keenan said. “We cannot trust Mitt Romney to protect our health. He would repeal ObamaCare, taking away our access to better maternity and prenatal care, and the law's near universal coverage of birth control. And we cannot trust Mitt Romney to respect our rights.”

Anti-abortion 'personhood' measure fails to make Colo. ballot

By Sam Baker

A controversial "personhood" amendment may not qualify for the ballot this year in Colorado — another setback for a policy that has divided abortion-rights opponents.

The Colorado secretary of state said Wednesday that personhood supporters don't have enough valid signatures to get their proposal added to the November ballot.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund celebrated the news, saying personhood won't be on the ballot in any state this November — a big change from just months ago, when supporters were angling for ballot initiatives in several swing states.
