Anti-abortion-rights groups slam McCain

By Elise Viebeck

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is drawing sharp rebuke on the right for saying that Republicans should "leave the [abortion] issue alone."

The Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List and Personhood USA, both groups that oppose abortion rights, attacked McCain after he spoke about the issue on "Fox News Sunday."

"As far as young women are concerned, absolutely, I don't think anybody like me — I can state my position on abortion, but, other than that, leave the issue alone," McCain said.

Catholic bishop vows to keep fighting birth-control mandate

By Sam Baker

Catholics won't stop fighting the Obama administration's contraception mandate, Cardinal Timothy Dolan reportedly said Tuesday.

The Associated Press reported that Dolan, the president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, said the church will not comply with the mandate and will continue challenging it in court.

Churches and houses of worship are exempt from the administration's policy requiring employers to include contraception in their employees' healthcare plans. Forty-four percent of voters backed Amendment 6, according to The Associated Press — far less than the 60 percent needed for its enactment.

The measure would have prevented state employees from using their healthcare coverage for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or when the woman's life is threatened. It would also have made privacy rights in Florida no more expansive that they are federally, a development that could have paved the way for further abortion restrictions in the state.
