Lobby group for health insurance industry announces layoffs

By Julian Pecquet - 10/19/10 07:14 PM ET

The main health insurance industry lobby is laying off about 10 percent of its workforce, or 15 to 20 people.

Despite the staff cuts, America's Health Insurance Plans is also believed to be close to making several senior-level advocacy hires.

A spokesman for AHIP says the organization is simply preparing to meet the challenges of the post-reform environment.

"We are restructuring to meet the new advocacy and policy challenges facing our growing membership," Robert Zirkelbach said.

He added that membership is growing and revenues are at an all-time high.

The health insurance industry bore the brunt of Democratic criticism during the health reform debate, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) going so far as to call them "villains."
