House panel pushes bill to promote child nutrition

By Mike Lillis - 06/28/10 12:31 PM ET

The House Education and Labor Committee will gather on Thursday to examine legislation promoting healthier food in the nation's schools.

The Improving Nutrition for America's Children Act would increase funding for nutrition education, expand eligibility for school breakfast and lunch programs and create minimum standards for food sold in school vending machines. Sponsored by Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), who chairs the House labor panel, the bill would also expand food safety protections in schools.

The witnesses have yet to be announced.
