Poll: More Americans trust Dems on healthcare

By Mike Lillis - 06/16/10 01:30 PM ET

By a wide margin, more Americans trust Democrats than Republicans to tackle the country's healthcare troubles, according to a poll released Wednesday by the Associated Press.

About 51 percent of respondents trust Democrats "to do better job handling healthcare," the AP found, while 38 percent said they trust Republicans. The figures are largely consistent with the AP's findings throughout the year. (In January, for example, the split was 48-38 in favor of the Democrats.)

Democrats were quick to trumpet the results, with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) blasting the findings to reporters. Still, lawmakers have plenty to be concerned about, the poll shows: 73 percent of respondents said they disapprove of the job Congress is doing, while just 24 percent indicated approval.

The poll was conducted by GfK Roper Public Affairs & Corporate Communications, which surveyed more than 1,000 people between June 9 and June 14.
