Federal judge hears first arguments against healthcare reform law

By Julian Pecquet - 07/01/10 05:52 PM ET

A federal judge in Richmond on Thursday heard the first arguments against the healthcare reform law. The judge, Henry Hudson of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, said he'd decide by the end of the month whether to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

The lawsuit questions whether Congress has the constitutional authority to mandate that people buy health insurance. The federal government is challenging Cuccinelli's standing in the case.
