HHS awards $46 million to states for insurance rate review

The Department of Health and Human Services on Monday awarded $46 million in grants for states to improve their oversight of health insurance premiums.
The grants — $1 million for each of 45 states and the district of Columbia — are funded by the healthcare reform law, which sets aside $250 million for five years of grants. They are aimed at helping states better track insurers' proposed rate increase, and in some cases take action to prevent them.
"States will use these grant dollars in the way that makes the most sense for their insurance consumers," said Jay Angoff, director of the Office of Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight.
