News bites: Survey finds most Americans support 'free' birth-control rule

Some 63 percent of Americans said they support the Obama administration's requirement that health insurance plans supply free contraceptives as a preventive benefit for women, Kaiser Health News reports.

A judge ruled drug-distribution companies must police themselves to help keep addictive prescription painkillers off the streets, The Wall Street Journal reports.

A new global drug industry code of conduct regarding gifts to doctors clarifies the differences between gifts, promotional aids and items such as anatomical models that can be used in medical practice, Bloomberg reports.

States' financial liability for the healthcare reform law's mandates is likely to be relatively small, according to a new report from the nonprofit, nonpartisan National Institute for Health Care Reform.
