Report: Jeb Bush told Fla. GOP to reject Medicaid expansion

By Sam Baker - 02/21/13 04:44 PM ET

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) told statehouse Republicans they should reject the Medicaid expansion that Gov. Rick Scott (R) has now endorsed, according to a report at National Review Online (NRO).

Bush addressed Medicaid during a visit earlier this month that was primarily centered on education reform, NRO reported.

“He said that rejecting the Obamacare expansion was good policy, and told them to come up with some conservative alternatives," a source told the magazine.

Scott made waves Wednesday by saying he would accept the Medicaid expansion in President Obama's healthcare law — the seventh Republican governor to do so. It was a sharp reversal for Scott, who led the charge against the Affordable Care Act in the courts and had specifically ruled out its Medicaid expansion.

Conservatives were deeply upset with Scott's decision to embrace the expansion, and could use Bush's opposition in an effort to scuttle Scott's plans in the state legislature.
