Anti-abortion groups slam FDA advisory panel on morning after pill

By Julian Pecquet - 06/17/10 06:09 PM ET

Anti-abortion groups are slamming a panel of experts that unanimously recommended today that the Food and Drug Administration approve the morning-after pill ulipristal. The groups, which include the Family Research Council and Americans United for Life, say the drug more closely resembles the abortion pill RU-486 than the Plan B morning-after pill.

Jeanne Monahan, director of the center for human dignity at the Family Research Council, tells The Hill that her group is particularly upset that the drug is being recommended as an emergency contraceptive and not as an abortifacient. The drug, which is sold in Europe, is effective up to five days after sex and would only be available by prescription if it's approved by the FDA.

"My reaction is that's not good science," said Monahan.
