News bites: CMS accused of giving privileged access to Wall Street

By Julian Pecquet - 12/09/11 08:35 AM ET

Federal Medicare officials held a private briefing for Wall Street insiders in 2009 on the future of specific medical devices, giving the select group insight on impending agency decisions worth hundreds of millions of dollars, according to a new report by the Project On Government Oversight.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is open to charging richer seniors more for Medicare to help pay for a two-year "doc fix," Inside Health Policy reports.

State funding for community health centers reached a seven-year low for fiscal 2012, reports Kaiser Health News.

A new CMS report found wide variation in healthcare spending across the United States, with New England states on average 29 percent higher than the national average of $6,815 in total personal healthcare spending per capita. The Rocky Mountain and Southwest regions were about 15 percent below the national average.
