US investigating blood thinner Plavix

By Elise Viebeck - 03/11/13 02:31 PM ET

The Justice Department is looking into blood thinner Plavix, which regulators have warned may increase the risk of heart attack and stroke for some people.

The blockbuster drug from French pharmaceutical company Sanofi prevents blood clots by interacting with an enzyme that might not be present in all patients, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The new investigation centers on the "variability of response to Plavix," according to a Sanofi filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The AP reported that U.S. regulators added a safety warning to the Plavix label in 2010 because of the likelihood that some patients could not metabolize the drug.

Plavix was the No. 2 drug in the world before last May, raking in annual sales of about $9 billion, the wire service reported.
