By Julian Pecquet - 05/04/11 10:49 AM ET

The Medicare agency has hired the director of hospital medicine at Cincinnati Children's Hospital to be its new chief medical officer, The Hill has learned.

Patrick Conway will also serve as director of the agency's Office of Clinical Standards and Quality, which aims to reduce health disparities. In his previous role, the associate professor was responsible for improving the measurement and quality of care in a $1.5 billion healthcare system.

Conway previously served as Chief Medical Officer for planning and evaluation at the Department of Health and Human Services and was a White House Fellow assigned to HHS' Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality in 2007 and 2008.

Conway's first day is expected to be May 9.
