Medicare agency to unveil electronic health records regulations

By Julian Pecquet - 07/12/10 04:02 PM ET

The agency that oversees Medicare is slated to unveil final regulations regarding electronic health records Tuesday morning. Last year's recovery act set aside $2 billion for doctors and hospitals who adopt the technology quickly, but also calls for penalties for those who fail to make the shift to a paperless system by 2015.

A number of providers have been calling for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to give them more time.

The announcement will mark Donald Berwick's first public appearance as CMS administrator, following his controversial recess appointment last week.
