Driving the news today

By Julian Pecquet - 06/16/10 07:00 AM ET

It's New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone's turn to investigate the health effects of the BP oil spill. The Energy and Commerce health panel chairman will hold his hearing at 2 p.m., after the Senate Health and Energy and Commerce panels have already had their turns. In the morning, we'll also drop by Sen. Daniel Akaka's (D-Hawaii) Veterans' Affairs hearing on veterans' access in rural areas.

On the healthcare reform front, Rep. Lois Capps (D-Calif.) and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius detail primary care investments in the healthcare reform law during a morning press call.

And the Senate continues debate on the tax extenders bill, with possible floor action on Sen. Max Baucus' (D-Mont.) substitute amendment.

Ethical issues with the latest in genetics research come under the microscope during separate meetings of the Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society and the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee. And the Global Health Council lays down its global health goals for 2010 during its 37th annual conference.

For lighter fare, you won't want to miss the kids dressed like fruits and vegetables outside the Dirksen building, who will be pressing senators to pass child nutrition legislation.

We'll wrap up our day bringing you the highlights from Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's webcast town hall meeting about his state's lawsuit against the healthcare law.
