Bachmann: Romney and Gingrich are health law's 'father and grandfather'

By Julian Pecquet - 12/23/11 12:27 PM ET

Presidential candidates Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich can't be relied upon to repeal Democrats' healthcare reform law, rival Michele Bachmann said Thursday at a campaign event in Iowa.

"It's very clear that we won't see from Mitt Romney any attempt to repeal ObamaCare. We won't see from Newt Gingrich any real attempt to repeal ObamaCare," the Minnesota congresswoman said, according to the Des Moines Register. "Why? Because they are the father and grandfather of ObamaCare. It's not going to happen."

All the Republican candidates have vowed to do their utmost to repeal the health law if they are elected.

Front-runners Romney and Gingrich, however, both face criticism from conservatives for having in the past supported the law's requirement that everyone have health insurance, Romney as governor of Massachusetts in 2006 and Gingrich when he was pushing an alternative to President Clinton's health overhaul in the early 1990s.

Bachmann's latest jab comes as she trails in fifth place less than two weeks before the Jan. 3 Iowa caucus; only 8 percent of likely voters support her, according to an average of Iowa polls from Real Clear Politics. Texas Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) is in first place with 24 percent, followed by Romney (20 percent), Gingrich (17 percent) and Texas Gov. Rick Perry (12 percent).
