New AFP ad: Healthcare law like Canada's system
A new ad from Americans for Prosperity blasts President Obama by comparing the 2010 healthcare law to Canada's single-payer system.
The super-PAC ad, released just as the Democratic National Convention begins, features a Canadian woman describing her struggle with a rare brain condition.
The woman, Shona Holmes, says that the Canadian healthcare system endangered her life by delaying treatments that she needed.
A narrator goes on to say: "To protect America's patient-centered care, we must replace President Obama."
Much of Canadian healthcare is publicly funded — the country's laws guarantee access to certain services. Obama's Affordable Care Act seeks to expand coverage through an individual mandate to buy insurance and by expanding Medicaid.
AFP's ad will run in swing states as part of a $6.2 million airtime purchase.
The spot will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Minnesota, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin and North Carolina, according to the group, a conservative super-PAC with links to the Tea Party.
