Report: Former Obama health official might run for Mass. governor

By Sam Baker - 01/08/13 05:53 PM ET

Donald Berwick, formerly a top healthcare official in the Obama administration, is reportedly considering a run for Massachusetts governor in 2014.

Berwick was controversial on Capitol Hill, but he remains a widely respected doctor and healthcare expert. He served as director of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, before stepping down when his interim appointment expired.

The State House News Service in Massachusetts reported Tuesday that Berwick is thinking seriously about running for governor next year, after Gov. Deval Patrick (D) steps down.

"That's correct. I'm strongly considering it," Berwick told the news service.

Berwick helped found the Institute for Healthcare Improvement at Harvard University, and is a fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress.
