Feds: Beware of illegal fireworks on 4th of July

By Julian Pecquet - 07/01/11 01:41 PM ET

Customs agents are cautioning consumers of the dangers of illegally imported fireworks.

Some 6,300 fireworks injuries were reported last year in the 30 days surrounding the July 4 Independence Day holiday, says the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which comes to an average of 200 a day. Almost 40 percent were related to firecrackers, bottle rockets and sparklers.

Federal authorities are particularly worried about imports that don't comply with national safety standards, and the commission is working with customs and border agents to stop unsafe imports at select ports.

"Much of that effort requires the due diligence of the American consumer — to make sure that they clearly understand what they're buying and that the products are safe," said Dan Baldwin, executive director of Customs and Border Protection's cargo and conveyance security office.
