Report: Drugmakers see shortage of flu shots

By Elise Viebeck - 01/10/13 01:36 PM ET

Two major drugmakers are reporting shortages of flu treatments and vaccines amid an onslaught of illness throughout the country, according to Reuters.

Sanofi SA said Thursday that four of its six formulations of seasonal flu vaccine Fluzone are sold out. And Roche Holding AG, the firm behind Tamiflu, reported a shortage of the drug's liquid form late Wednesday.

Tamiflu helps treat the flu in vulnerable populations like children.

Influenza has swept the United States in the last month, arriving nearly five weeks earlier than usual.

As of the last week in December, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that 41 states are experiencing "widespread geographic influenza activity," a sharp increase from the week before.

The share of people seeing doctors for flu-like symptoms recently hit 5.6 percent nationally, more than double the peak proportion from last year, the CDC said.
