Consumers Union: 'Superbugs' in livestock becoming 'national health crisis'

By Megan R. Wilson

The political arm of the product review magazine Consumer Reports on Tuesday urged lawmakers and federal regulators to take steps to eliminate antibiotic use in healthy animals.

The group, Consumers Union, says the overuse contributes to antibiotic drug-resistant “superbugs” in humans.

“The declining effectiveness of antibiotics has become a national health crisis,” said Ami Gadhia, the nonprofit organization’s senior policy counsel, said in a statement. “Approximately 80 percent of antibiotics sold in the United States are used in livestock production, often times on healthy animals. The use of antibiotics in livestock needs to be curbed so that consumers aren’t threatened by these superbugs that can’t be treated.”

GOP hits Obama over 'glitches' comment

By Sam Baker

Republicans piled on President Obama over his concession Tuesday that there will be "glitches and bumps" in the rollout of his healthcare law.

Republican campaign committees seized on the comments, linking them to a poll released earlier Tuesday that showed the law remains unpopular.

"Though he proudly proclaimed that 90 percent of Americans are experiencing the benefits of ObamaCare, a new poll shows that only 35 percent of the country has a 'favorable' impression of the disastrous law," the National Republican Congressional Committee said.

Poll: 40 percent don't know ObamaCare is still law

By Sam Baker

Forty percent of the public does not know that President Obama's healthcare law remains on the books and is being implemented, according to a new poll from the Kaiser Family Foundation.

The survey is a stark reminder of the daunting task ahead for the White House as it works not only to remind people that the law exists, but to encourage them to enroll in its new coverage options.

Seven percent of those polled thought the law was struck down by the Supreme Court. Twelve percent thought Congress has repealed the law, and another 23 percent didn't know or refused to answer.

Healthcare experts propose $1 trillion in savings

By Elise Viebeck

A bevy of healthcare experts released recommendations Monday for cost-conscious reforms to Medicare, Medicaid and private insurance they said could save $1 trillion over two decades.

In a Brookings Institution study, the experts urge Washington to embrace small, consensus-driven policy moves to lower healthcare costs rather than wait for a major deficit-reduction deal.

"The time to act on these proposals is now," study authors wrote. "It is time to put a sharp and direct focus on achieving both better health and cost savings."

Bipartisan group calls for broader religious exemptions in ObamaCare

By Pete Kasperowicz

House Republicans and Democrats have joined together to re-introduce a bill that would expand the religious conscience exemptions under ObamaCare.

Under the Equitable Access to Care and Health (EACH) Act, individuals would have the option of being exempted from the Affordable Healthcare Act's mandate to buy health insurance. People could avoid the mandate by filing an affidavit as part of their tax return saying their religious beliefs keep them from buying insurance that meets federal standards.
