Glickman stepping down from MPAA

By Kevin Bogardus - 01/22/10 03:41 PM ET

Dan Glickman will step down as the head of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) on April 1 but his permanent replacement has not been found yet.

It was announced Friday that Bob Pisano, president and chief operating officer at MPAA, will jump in to serve as interim CEO for the business association that represents the movie industry while the search will continue for Glickman’s replacement.

Glickman, a former nine-term Democratic congressman from Kansas and Agriculture secretary during the Clinton administration, has been MPAA’s CEO since 2004. He previously announced that he would not seek to renew his contract beyond September 2010 and has worked with the trade group to find its new leader. Glickman will move on to Refugees International, where he will be president.

“This is a powerful medium that can help make a difference, and I will always value my time here,” Glickman said in a statement. “For me, perhaps the best thing about the job was the movies. I love movies. And as far as I am concerned, we make the best movies in the world.”

Pisano has been with MPAA since 2005. Before coming to the trade association, he was national executive director and chief executive officer of the Screen Actors Guild and has also worked at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) as well as Paramount Pictures.

Heading up MPAA is one of the more coveted jobs on K Street.

MPAA is one of the bigger associations in Washington. It spent more than $1.8 million on lobbying in 2009, including on contracts with outside firms like Van Scoyoc Associates and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld, according to lobbying disclosure records. Also, representing the glitz and glamour of Hollywood carries some prestige.
