Facebook lures Levine from the White House
White House staffer Marne Levine will leave next month to become vice president of public policy at Facebook, where she will lead an expansion of the company's policy teams in Asia, the Americas and Europe.
Facebook spokesman Andrew Noyes confirmed Levine will leave her post as chief of staff for the White House National Economic Council to join Facebook's growing policy shop in Washington, D.C. She will coordinate Facebook's interactions with governments and nonprofit organizations on policy issues around the world.
“I’m excited that Marne is joining my team. ... With over 70 percent of our users living outside the United States, her unique mix of government and Internet industry experience will be invaluable to help Facebook address some of the most interesting questions at the intersection of technology and public policy,” said Elliot Schrage, Facebook vice president for global communications, marketing and public policy.
In her current position Levine helps coordinate the development of economic policy. Previously she served as Larry Summers's chief of staff when he was president of Harvard University. She started her career at the Treasury Department, where she worked in the Office of Legislative Affairs and Public Liaison.
Levine will join a Facebook D.C. office lead by Tim Sparapani, who will continue to manage outreach to Congress and the federal government. With Richard Allan continuing as director of public policy for the European Union, Levine's efforts will focus on increasing Facebook's outreach to the remainder of the globe.
