GSA revamps USA.gov

By Gautham Nagesh - 07/02/10 09:50 AM ET

The government's official Web portal, USA.gov, was re-launched Friday with a new design and features aimed at mobile users, according to an announcement from the General Services Administration (GSA).

The site, which will celebrate its 10th anniversary this year, serves as the official online gateway to a host of government information, services and public engagement platforms. USA.gov's new state-of-the-art search engine is nine times faster than the previous version and now provides citizens with a "related search-as-you-type" function.

"Revamped with direct input from the public, USA.gov leverages cutting-edge technology to provide faster, easier, more innovative government services directly to the American people," said Dave McClure, GSA associate administrator for the Office of Citizen Services and Innovative Technologies.

Among the 17 mobile applications now offered through the site are a body mass index calculator, an app tracking product recalls, the FBI's most-wanted list and programs to help users locate a nearby U.S. Embassy or alternative fuel station.

"Through mobile apps citizens can leverage government information to make decisions affecting their daily lives, whether checking airport wait times in line at the airport or scanning a bar code at their local store to check for food and product recalls," McClure said.
