Cable, telecom firms spend big on lobbying

By Gautham Nagesh - 08/23/10 05:23 PM ET

Verizon, AT&T and Comcast were among the biggest spenders on lobbying in the first half of 2010, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.

The three companies joined the National Cable and Telecommunications Association as being among the top 20 lobbying spenders so far this year. The battle over broadband reclassification, Comcast's proposed acquisition of NBC Universal and the distribution of stimulus funds for broadband expansion have all pushed telecom and cable firms to boost their business on K Street, as The Hill reported in June.

Verizon was the biggest spender, at $9.2 million, followed closely by AT&T at $9.1 million. The NCTA spent $7.9 million and Comcast doled out $6.9 million.
