White House visitor logs show Rahm spent quality time with the media

By Gautham Nagesh - 10/01/10 11:28 AM ET

Judging by the list of journalists he's met with while serving as White House chief of staff, Rahm Emmanuel won't have any trouble attracting media attention for his campaign to be mayor of Chicago.

The transparency watchdog Sunlight Foundation reviewed the White House visitor's logs and found a long list of journalists who sat down with Emanuel for some face time. Sunlight's Paul Blumenthal notes that while most of Emmanuel's interactions with the press were likely by phone or e-mail, the list of reporters who've met him in person is extensive and includes names such as Karen Tumulty of The Washington Post, Ryan Lizza of The New Yorker and Tom Friedman of The New York Times.

"Something the White House might not miss was Emanuel’s penchant to dish to journalists and play the Washington access game," Blumenthal wrote.

But one name in particular stands out from a June 9, 2010, meeting with Emmanuel: Keith R. Murdoch. The White House has yet to confirm that the person in question is Keith Rupert Murdoch, Australian media mogul and founder of News Corp. But Newsweek's Jonathan Alter (another of the names in the visitors log) reported in his book The Promise that Emmanuel kept a line of communication open with the owner of Fox News and the New York Post.
