Hackers target Beck's Tea Party 'money bomb'
Hackers targeted the pro-Tea Party conservative group FreedomWorks's website on Thursday just as the group was launching a major fundraising drive promoted by Fox News host Glenn Beck.
According to The Wall Street Journal the attacks took down the website at around 9:45 a.m., just as Beck was publicizing the planned "money bomb." Freedomworks officials estimated the group lost $80,000 in potential donations while they worked to get the site back online.
“It’s like the tea party movement’s been hacked,” Freedomworks spokesman Adam Brandon told the Journal. “To us, it’s no coincidence this happened the day our Beck money bomb was announced.”
A later investigation uncovered a highly sophisticated hacker attack at
6:55 a.m. that took down the website but did not result in any data
being lost or stolen. Brandon said the group lead by former House Majority Leader Dick Armey intends to inform law enforcement about the attack.
