FCC to explore text-message 911 service

By Sara Jerome - 12/22/10 10:33 AM ET

Although the decision to move forward on net-neutrality rules overshadowed it, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) moved forward on another significant effort on Tuesday: the E-911 inquiry.

The inquiry will look at ways to update the emergency system so people can text message, rather than just call, for help. It will also explore ways to allow people to send photos and video to first responders so they can better assess how to confront an emergency situation.

The inquiry also notes that text messaging could be useful "in circumstances where a call could further jeopardize someone’s life and safety — texting may be the only way to reach out for help."
