Genachowski ready to debate Congress on net neutrality

By Sara Jerome - 02/09/11 11:47 AM ET

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chairman Julius Genachowski is ready to have a debate with Congress on the merits of net-neutrality rules, he said Wednesday during a panel interview.

"We are prepared to explain what we did and why we did it," he said, referring to the FCC's decision to create rules about how broadband companies' lines treat Internet traffic.

"If there's a debate, we will engage in the debate," he added.

House Republicans have pledged to do battle with the chairman over these regulations through budget measures and the Congressional Review Act.

Genachowski also mentioned that he does not like the term "net neutrality." The chairman's office instead uses the term "open Internet." The term "net neutrality" was coined by proponents of the regulations.
