Glenn Beck says Google is 'in bed' with the government

By Sara Jerome - 02/15/11 12:44 PM ET

Fox News commentator Glenn Beck accused Google of being "in bed" with the government during his program on Monday.

Encouraging people to investigate hypothetical ties between the government and the media, Beck said: "May I recommend if you're doing your own homework, don't do a Google search. It seems to me that Google is pretty deeply in bed with the government."

His basis for this accusation was instances of antagonism between Google and foreign countries. He may have been referring to Chinese authorities who threatened to revoke the company's license to operate there last year.

Beck singled out Jared Cohen, a Google executive who previously worked for the State Department.

"Who is Jared Cohen? Is he a private citizen or government operative? And isn't this the second Google guy we've found?" he said.

Cohen was in Egypt during the protests there this year. There is no evidence he is a "government operative" beyond Beck's insinuations.

The liberal group Media Matters posted Beck's remarks along with the clip of his comments, below.
