CCIA opposes Leahy patent bill

By Sara Jerome - 02/28/11 08:52 AM ET

The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) wrote to members of the Senate on Monday to oppose a patent reform bill written by Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy (Vt).

The billed passed out of committee earlier this month and is headed to the floor for debate this week. CCIA called the bill "a disappointment to the tech sector" and said the bill leaves the industry "worse" than it was before.

"At this point, we believe that the best course of action is to strip the controversial parts of the bill and to focus on addressing the real needs and capacity of the [United States Patent and Trademark Office] — where it is clear that action is needed now," said Ed Black, president of CCIA.
