Bono Mack to introduce data protection bill

Rep. Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) said Wednesday that she plans to introduce legislation to protect consumer data on the Internet. 

Bono Mack, the leader of the Energy and Commerce Trade subcommittee, has previously called for heightened scrutiny of how companies use online data, but had yet to announce the need for a bill.

The infiltration of the Sony's PlayStation Network by hackers prompted Bono Mack's call for legislation. Personal information, including credit card data, was potentially compromised in the hack. Bono Mack said subcommittee staff will investigate the breach. 

Bono Mack said Wednesday: "I am deeply troubled by this latest data breach. It reinforces my long-held belief that much more needs to be done to protect sensitive consumer information. Most importantly, Americans should be quickly informed when their personal information has been hacked, especially in instances like this where there is an obvious potential for large scale identity theft."
