Sony begins restoring PlayStation Network after security breach

By Gautham Nagesh - 05/15/11 12:54 PM ET

Sony announced Saturday that is has begun restoring the PlayStation Network gaming network after an attack last month jeopardized the personal information for 77 million consumers across the globe.

Sony began phased restoration of some services starting with online multiplayer gaming Saturday following an announcement from president Kazuo Hirai. Users must change their passwords and update their PlayStation's firmware before logging back into the network.

Sony's delay of almost a week before notifying customers that their data may have been breached has prompted widespread outrage from authorities worldwide and appears to have added to the impetus for Congress to pass a national data breach law to replace the current patchwork of state laws.

Sony attributed the delay to its choice to cooperate with authorities and attempt to identify the cuase of the breach before notifying customers. The firm has suggested the vigilante hacker group Anonymous was behind the attack, which Anonymous has denied.
