Pew: Minorities continue to lead Twitter adoption

By Gautham Nagesh - 06/01/11 12:43 PM ET

Blacks and Hispanics continue to sign up for Twitter at higher rates than the general population, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center.

According to a recent survey of 2,277 adult Web users, 13 percent of online adults identify as Twitter users, up from 8 percent in November 2010. Ninety-five percent of Twitter users own a mobile phone and half use the device to access the service.

Minority Web users are more than twice as likely to be active on the micro-blogging service than non-Hispanic whites. Twenty-five percent of black Web users and 19 percent of Hispanics are on Twitter, as opposed to 9 percent of whites.

Recent surveys have shown blacks and Latinos tend to rely on their mobile phones as their primary connection to the Web at a far greater rate than the general population. The groups have recently been on the forefront in terms of adopting the latest digital communications tools.
