Holder: Cybersecurity is a 'top priority'
Attorney General Eric Holder said cybersecurity is one the top priorities for the Justice Department at a speech Thursday touting the Obama administration's progress on the issue.
During a speech at the Northwest Indiana Cyber Security Summit in Hammond, Ind., Holder pointed to DOJ's "Cyber Monday" crackdown on counterfeit goods online last November as well as several other recent enforcement efforts as evidence of the administration's success fighting digital crime.
"We have agents and attorneys in place across the globe, where they work alongside local law enforcement teams to identify and combat cybersecurity threats. We’re able to respond to potential problems more quickly and effectively
than ever," Holder said.
"I’m proud to report that this work is — and it will remain — a top priority not only for me personally, but for our nation’s Department of Justice, and for this administration at the Cabinet level."
The Obama administration has been far more aggressive in going after online piracy, digital theft and counterfeiting than its predecessors, particularly in the past year. The administration has shut down dozens of sites connected online piracy, counterfeit goods, and illegal streaming by seizing their domains.
"In just the last few months, the Justice Department has brought cases against a number of criminal conspirators for their roles in coordinated cybercrimes that, according to court documents, netted nearly 1.5 million dollars from U.S. victims," Holder said.
Holder emphasized that the government needs cooperation from the private sector in order to prosecute cybercrime, particularly with regards to sharing information on attacks.
Several of the proposed cybersecurity bills in front of Congress would allow businesses to share information on cyber-attacks with the government by addressing concerns about legal liability and investor relations.
